Alaska Native History, Cultures, and Traditions Practice Test

What has been a consequence of self-determination laws for Alaska Native education?

Federal control of education remains unchanged.

Education funding decreased.

Tribal councils were abolished.

Enabled tribes and Alaska Native organizations to assume control of education, health, and other services; increased self-determination and local decision-making.

Self-determination laws shift authority from distant agencies to the people who know the communities best. In Alaska, these laws let tribes and Alaska Native organizations contract with or take over responsibility to run education, health, and other services. That means local leaders can decide what to teach, how schools operate, and how funds are used, making decisions closer to families and communities.

This is why the best answer says that tribes and Alaska Native organizations were empowered to assume control of education, health, and other services, and that self-determination and local decision-making increased. It reflects the actual change: more local control and culturally relevant approaches rather than unchanged federal control.

The other options don’t fit this shift. Federal control didn’t stay the same, funding isn’t inherently reduced, and tribal councils were not abolished—all of which contradict the move toward local, tribal-led governance.
